Born on February 12th, 1809 in Hodgensville, Kentucky, Abraham Lincoln remains the epitome of the "self-made man."

Asked about his ambitions, he said he wished to make himself "worthy of the esteem" of his fellows. This would of course include his step-mother, Sarah Bush Lincoln, and his biological mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln; and it was perhaps to honor both that he acknowledged "all I am, all I hope to be, I owe to my angel mother."

Now that we continue in the literal so-called "war on terror" an extension of the "war on drugs," as well as the figurative "culture war" which pits social and fiscal conservatives against folks less anxious about rubbing elbows with "the least among us," i.e. those who, like me, believe "live and let live" to be more than a throw-away line in Paul McCartney's 80's hit "Live and Let Die," please recall "Father Abraham's" inspiring and healing words: "with malice toward none, and charity to all," let us not forget "you can fool all of the people some of the time, and some of the people all of the time, but you can't fool all of the people all of the time."

Peace.

I like...

Aspiring to make myself worthy of the esteem of my fellows and fellas, like our 16th and arguably greatest president.
